24 Hour Design Challenge

The OZCHI conference student design challenge is a great opportunity for students from around the world to win a travel scholarship to Melbourne, Australia, and attend an international conference about interaction design to meet peers, academics, and professionals from the field.

In line with the conference theme "Design: Open 24/7" the challenge is organised as two separate 24 hour events:

Online challenge

The first 24-hour event took place online on 12-13 September 2009. 14 teams registered for the challenge; 9 teams successfully completed and submitted their entry within 24 hours. The design brief was to come up with a concept that demonstrates the future of maps for the city of Melbourne. The challenge was covered live on Twitter and summarised in two parts, wrapping up the first half and the second half of the 24 hours. Submissions were assessed by an international panel of judges according to (1) quality of design process and use of interaction design methods, (2) design quality, innovation and originality of the proposed concept, (3) considerations into user experience and user interaction, and (4) design quality, sophistication, and clarity of the submission (video and blog post). The winners are BFS with Palmap (1st prize), Haciendo with StoryTime (2nd prize), and 4LEAF with Artography (3rd prize).

Conference challenge

The second 24-hour event will take place in Melbourne on 23-24 November 2009, preceding the OZCHI 2009 conference. All students registered for the conference are invited to participate in this challenge. Teams will have 24 hours to develop a concept that envisions innovative use of mobile and ubiquitous computing technologies. The design brief will be announced on-site on 23 November.  All submissions from this round will be exhibited during OZCHI 2009. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite submission. The winners of this round will be determined based on the audience voting and announced on the last day of the conference. The top two entries from this round will earn a Certificate of Recognition and prizes sponsored by our industry partners.
